The Murcia region

Murcia offers a good deal more than just good clean beaches and sunshine. It still retains vast areas of unspoilt countryside in the Sierra Espuna and a wealth of history and interesting places to visit. Cartegena in particular is magnificent and has protected and preserved its Roman heritage and buildings. It hosts a huge festival once a year to celebrate with the football stadium transformed into a Roman games arena and an entire themed village is erected for the obligatory fiesta. It is now also a regular stop off for luxury cruise liners and has the best in shopping, theatre and nightlife.

Murcia itself has a huge waterpark and zoo together with a vast complex of shop until you drop malls with cinemas, restaurants, bowling etc.

There are several superb golf courses within reach, in particular the Hacienda del Alamo just a 30 minute drive away or at La Manga about 1hr 15mins. Camposol is the nearest at just 20 minutes away.

There are big plans for the region in the near future as Paramount Studios begin to create the biggest theme park in Europe. The project is now under way and with guaranteed weather and the natural Spanish flair for party it will surely eclipse Paris Disney.

Puerto de Mazarron

Mazarron also has some interesting history and was once a bustling mining town. The multi coloured mounds surrounding the old mineworks have been preserved and can be clearly seen on the outskirts when approaching the town. Ancient Phoenician ships were discovered in the bay and can still be viewed in situ. The port itself survived on its fishing fleet before the growth of tourism and it still retains a bustling trade and market. To be able to have such a huge choice of fresh caught fish is a real treat. In recent years the old fishing port has transformed into a posh marina with a jaw dropping display of yachts and cruisers moored around the smart bars and restaurants which offer a variety of international dishes to suit all budgets and tastes. The large fishing boats still work out of the port having been reallocated to moorings at the end of the marina with a new auction house.

Here, you will not find a McDonalds but it is still easy to enjoy the traditional pleasures of good wine and tapas in the many surviving and friendly cafes and bars in the back streets of the Port. This area is predominantly a family resort with something for everyone. Unspoilt by high rise hotels it is one of the few Costas that has managed to evolve with tourism yet retain its unique charm and culture .For those more lively and seeking nightlife all is not lost as there are several excellent clubs and outdoor dance venues outside the Port area on the way to Mazarron and towards Bolnuevo.

Water sports available include diving, jet ski, windsurfing, boat hire, fishing, and more during the high season when there is always an excuse found for a fiesta or bank holiday.Cycling is easy along the coast with paths provided to the quiet beaches and less developed area of La Azioha. Or in the opposite direction towards Bolnuevo and its weird wind eroded rock sculptures and naturists beaches.
