Villa Maria Barcelonya

Villa Maria was built in 1907 by Mariano Viñas in honour of his brother, the tenor Francesc Viñas, hence the circular and semi-circular spaces, well suited for rehearsing and showcasing the tenor’s voice. (You can try this yourself by raising your voice in the centre of the circular room, or in the center of the semicircle in front of his bust in the garden - for the latter, project your voice downwards at 45 degrees towards the stone semicircle).

Francesc Viñas Dordai, was born in Moya (Barcelona), May 27th, 1863, and died in Barcelona on July 14th, 1933. Of humble origins, he was a shepherd in his childhood, but always showed an inclination to music. Francesc was given his first big break in 1888, when his teacher Goula invited him to sing Lohengrin in the Liceo theatre in Barcelona. A year later he had his debut in La Scala opera house in Milan and his successful career continued to develop in the major theatres around the world: Milan, Turin, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Covent Garden in London and the Metropolitan in New York.
He was later knighted by Queen Victoria, and received ovations wherever he performed.

The Viñas brothers were active supporters of republican ideals. It is said that Josep Tarradellas, a renowned Catalan left wing nationalist and one of the “founding fathers of the Catalonia” - hid in Villa Maria in the hideout under the stairs during the fall of the republican government at the end of the Civil War.

Also according to oral legend, some years ago, one of the occupants of Villa María was visited by a Buddhist monk, who, nearing his deathbed, requested permission to have his body buried in the garden when he left this world. His remains are buried near the tunnel at the end of the garden thus providing nutrients for the abundant flora.

The Francesc Viñas music competition, which began in this very house, is still celebrated in Barcelona. There is also a street that bears his name and some of his descendants live in Vallvidrera.

How to get there
Walk to Plaza Cataluña, and opposite Café Zurich walk down the stairs following signs to FGC. If you are staying at the Gallery turn right out of the hotel and walk one block to Provença train station.
Buy a T10 ticket (9€) which will give you 10 journeys on all public transport in Barcelona (various people can use the same ticket).
Take the S1 or S2 train headed either to Terrassa or Sabadell (do not get in the front carriage of the train as this does not stop at Peu de Funicular).
Get off at Peu de Funicular (12 mins), walk up the stairs to the Funicular (included in your ticket) and get off at the last stop (Vallvidrera Superior) – (4 mins)
Walk out of the station, Villa Maria is the first house on your left (Carrer Queralt 18).
The Funicular and the trains run until 00:00 am and starts at 5:00 am, and to 02:00 am Fridays and Saturdays, so you can either go back the way you came, or we can arrange a taxi for you (approx. 30€)


Villa María fue mandada a construir en el año 1907 por Mariano Viñas, en homenaje a su hermano, el tenor Francesc Viñas; de allí los espacios circulares y semi-circulares, apropiados para los ensayos y el lucimiento de la voz del tenor. (Puedes comprobarlo elevando la voz situándote en el centro del salón circular, o al centro del semicírculo frente a su busto en el jardín –en este último proyectando la voz en 45º hacia abajo, apuntando al semicírculo de piedra-).
Francesc Viñas Dordai, nació en Moya (Barcelona), el 27 de mayo de 1863, y murió en Barcelona el 14 de julio de 1933. De origen humilde, fue pastor en su niñez, pero siempre manifestó inclinación por la música. Le llegó su gran oportunidad en 1888, cuando el maestro Goula le ofreció cantar Lohengrin en el Teatro Liceo de Barcelona. Un año después debutó con la misma opera en la Scala de Milán y su exitosa carrera se desarrolló en los principales teatros del mundo: Milán, Turín, Roma, Madrid, Lisboa, el Covent Garden de Londres, el Metropolitan de Nueva York.
La Reina Victoria de Inglaterra lo nombro Sir, y recibió aplausos y homenajes en todos los lugares donde actuó.
Los hermanos Viñas eran simpatizantes activos de las ideas republicanas; se dice que el mismo Josep Tarradellas –un renombrado político republicano, catalanista y de izquierdas, uno de los “padres de la patria catalana”- se escondió en el zulo, –bajo las escaleras, de Villa María durante la caída del gobierno republicano al final de la guerra civil.
También cuenta la historia oral, que hace algunos años, uno de sus ocupantes recibió la visita de un monje budista, al que apremiaba su partida en breve tiempo; este solicitó permiso para enterrar su cuerpo cuando dejara este mundo. Se encuentra a uno de los lados del túnel al final del jardín así convertido ya en abono de las plantas que abundan por allí.
Además de una calle que lleva su nombre, aún se celebra en Barcelona el concurso de música de nuevos talentos Francesc Viñas, cuyos primeros se realizaron precisamente en esta casa. Algunos de sus descendientes viven aún en Vallvidrera.

Como llegar a Villa María
Demoras unos 25 min desde Plaza Cataluña en trasporte público y 40 en coche.

En transporte público desde Plaza Cataluña: Frente al Café Zurich, toma el FGC, las líneas S1, S2 o S3 (dirección Terrassa, Sabadell o San Cugat) y baja en la estación Peu del Funicular (atención, cuando tomes el tren, no subas en el primer vagón, puesto que en éste la salida no es accesible al andén de Peu del Funicular).
En Peu del Funicular (sin salir de la estación) toma el Funicular hasta la última parada, Vallvidrera Superior. (el funicular sale cada 4 minutos y demora unos 7 en subir).
Villa María es la primera casa a mano izquierda al salir de la estación del funicular de Vallvidrera Superior (Carrer de Queralt 18).
Para volver a Plaza Cataluña, el funicular y los trenes funcionan hasta las 00:00 y desde las 5:00 am, y hasta las 01:50 am viernes y sábados; un taxi que te buscaría en la puerta de la casa hasta plaza Cataluña cuesta aproximadamente unos 25€.
El ferrocarril además se lo puede tomar en Provenza (Provenza y Balmes), Gracia (Vía Augusta y Travessera de Gracia), Muntaner (Santaló y Vía Augusta) y Sarriá (Vía Augusta y Demestre).

Para llegar en coche, las indicaciones del GPS son “Carrer de Queralt, 18, 08017 Barcelona”. Ese día, la calle Queralt probablemente esté llena, por lo que puedes continuar por la carretera hacia la montaña unos 100 metros y aparcar sobre la misma carretera.
