The Healy Mac’s Story
In March 2016, Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant opened its doors on The Marina, Estepona in Spain’s Costa del Sol. Renowned for its stunning beaches, which stretch along some 21km of coastline, Estepona is a picturesque town in the province of Malaga and a hugely-popular year-round holiday destination. Overlooking the water at the Marina, Healy Mac’s in Estepona is the ninth outlet in the famed international chain and the newest addition to the chain quickly became a favourite with visitors to the area and locals alike.
The previous summer, the first Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant outside Asia opened its doors at Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, Co Mayo, Ireland. It was a homecoming of sorts for the multi-award-winning international chain, as the company was established by Mayo’s very own Liam Healy.
A native of Glenamoy in North Mayo, Liam opened his first Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant in the bustling area of Changkat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2008. Since then, the Healy Mac’s chain has continued to blossom, with the chain now boasting six outlets in Malaysia, one in Indonesia, one in Ireland and one in Spain.
In 2010, the second Healy Mac’s outlet was established on Straits Quay on the beautiful island of Penang in Malaysia, while a third Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant followed soon after in Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. In July 2015, Healy Mac’s in Hartamas relocated to a much larger outlet at nearby Publika, much to the delight of the local clientele. In 2011, the Healy Mac’s chain expanded further into Malaysia, with the opening of a new Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant in the Green Town area of Ipoh, 200km north of its first home in Kuala Lumpur.
Two years later, in 2013, the fifth Healy Mac’s outlet in Malaysia opened its doors on Jalan P Ramlee in Kuala Lumpur and this bar quickly established itself as one of the shining lights in the Healy Mac’s chain. Healy Mac’s on Jalan P Ramlee scooped several awards in its first year of business and continued this trend as the years progressed, going on to be named the Best Irish Pub in the World (outside Ireland) by the Irish Times and Diageo in the summer of 2015.
Indeed, 2015 was a very busy year for Liam Healy and the Healy Mac’s chain. In March 2015, a new Healy Mac’s outlet opened on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur. But this time, it was a Healy Mac’s with a difference, as the venue opened as a trendy jazz bar; a move that went down a storm with the locals.
That same month, Liam opened the first Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant outside Malaysia at the Centre Point Shopping Centre and Business Park in Medan, Indonesia. Of course, it was also the year that Healy Mac’s in Hartamas relocated to a new state-of-the-art premises at Publika in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
As if all of this wasn’t enough, the Healy Mac’s chain entered the Irish market in the summer of 2015 when Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant opened at Breaffy House Resort in Co Mayo. The previous year, Liam Healy and three other businessmen purchased the fabulous 90-acre resort in the west of Ireland and the new owners of the resort made the decision to bring the famed Irish hospitality back home to Ireland by establishing a Healy Mac’s Irish Bar and Restaurant back in Mayo where it all began. At Breaffy House Resort, Healy Mac’s is very much part of the overall package on offer for visitors and locals alike.
With nine Healy Mac’s outlets now in operation in Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland and Spain, the chain prides itself on excellent food, drink, atmosphere and customer service. Healy Mac’s has picked up myriad awards over the years and the business continues to go from strength-to-strength in Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland and Spain.
