The village of Garachico with its port was founded by Cristóbal de Ponte Genoese banker after the conquest of Tenerife in 1496. During the sixteenth and seventeenth Garachico became the main port of the island. From its port sailed ships laden with wine and sugar to America and Europe, which made progress economically garachiquense the population. In the past it was a complimentary port linking especially important Apurón Villa (now Santa Cruz de La Palma), Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Luz and Las Palmas, with the mainland and America.

In 1646, a landslide ended the lives of 100 people, also sinking 40 ships. On May 5, 1706 a volcano eruption Black Mountain ended the golden period of the town. At dawn seven lava flows down the slope and burying garachiquense destroying much of the town, especially its port, which was completely covered. Yet there were no fatalities. After this natural disaster traders then went to use the dock of Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico and remained a small fishing port. The lava flow that reached the sea territory earned the municipality and some pools and puddles known as Caletón.

The family of Simon Bolivar was Garachico, in a square of this town there is a statue of the famous Venezuelan liberator.
