Friends Valencia British Cemetery

La historia de los cementerios británicos en territorio español comienza en 13 de noviembre de 1831, cuando el Real Decreto autorizó el establecimiento de lugares adecuados para el entierro de aquellos ciudadanos no católicos cuyas vidas acabasen en territorio español o en sus costas, pero sin ningún tipo de iglesia, capilla o cualquier otro signo de culto público.

The history of the British Cemeteries in Spain wbegan after 1831 when, on 13th November, a Spanish Royal Degree authorized the establishment of suitable places for the interment of non-Catholics whose lives ended in Spain or on its shores, but without any church, chapel or any sign of public religious worship.

A pesar de su nombre original: Cementerio Protestante Británico, es un lugar no confesional, donde descansan juntos en paz personas de más de 21 nacionalidades y diversas religiones, incluso católicos enterrados por deseo propio o de sus familiares, ya que hasta 1989 solamente los católicos podían ser enterrados en el Cementerio Municipal.

Though British in name, the British Protestant Cemetery is actually a Non-Denominational one with over 21 different nationalities and religious believes included some Catholics who wished to be laid to rest beside their loved ones, because it was till 1989 the mandate that only Catholics be made to rest in the municipal cemetery.

Ubicado enfrente del Cementerio Municipal de Valencia, el cementerio tiene una superficie aproximada de 2.376 m², con una valla metálica de estilo funerario, coronada por búhos, protege la entrada al recinto. Su ornamental fachada data del año 1879 y fue diseñada por el artista valenciano, Antonio Martorell. El diseño del hall de entrada y la capilla, con sus puertas y ventanas vitrales, fue del arquitecto Vicente Sancho i Fuster.

Located opposite the Municipal Cemetery, the cemetery has a surface of approximately 2,376 m2, with an ornamental facade designed in 1879 by the Valencian artist, Antonio Martorell. A metal fence topped by owls with funeral resonance, protects the entrance to the grounds. The gate that leads to the cemetery itself, the stained-glass door to the hall and the chapel, were designed by the architect Vicente Sancho i Fuster.

Los elementos de estilo medieval junto con algunos pre-modernistas, típicos de las construcciones religiosas de la época, han resistido con dignidad el paso del tiempo. Las lápidas, cruces y ángeles no han sido tan afortunadas, en años anteriores sufrieron el vandalismo de algunas personas que se llevaron frisos decorativos y ángeles tallados, dañando algunas lápidas y tumbas. Existen alrededor de 350 tumbas, pero sólo se tiene registro de 296.

These elements of medieval style, typical of the religious buildings of the time, together with some pre modernistic ones, have held out as best they can against the passage of time. Gravestones and crosses have not always been so lucky; in recent years people have carried off decorative friezes and carved angels, and damaged some stones. There are around 350 graves but only 296 are actually recorded. We know that previous decades witnessed burials, but we are not sure where or when.

Tanto la epidemia de gripe de 1918, y más tarde la Guerra Civil, trajeron el caos y la muerte. Los registros de 1936-39 de la Cruz Roja se perdieron, a pesar de los esfuerzos del cónsul de Suiza y la Cruz Roja. En este recinto yacen también anónimamente enterrados las víctimas de la gripe y los voluntarios de las Brigadas Internacionales.

Spanish flu, in 1918; and later the defenders of the Spanish Republic brought havoc and death Unfortunately, during the Civil War, records from 1936-39 were lost in the chaos, in spite of the efforts of the Swiss Consul and Red Cross to continue its supervision. International Brigade volunteers and flu victims were anonymously interred in this ground.

La sepultura más reciente es la de Guillermo Fink Herreros, descendiente directo de Henry Fink, ciudadano británico y el primer conductor de trenes en Valencia. Los miembros de las familias Rees, Bartle, Morris y Tapp pasaron su vida laboral ayudando a mejorar las infraestructuras valencianas y ahora reposan en este lugar.

The most recent burial was of Guillermo Fink Herreros on 21st August, 2012, a descendent of a British train driver, Henry Fink. The cemetery bears witness to the history of whole families – Morris, Eknes, Bartle, Tapps – who participated in the industrial production and railway building epoch that brought them here to stay, in addition to those serving on the merchant ships that carried them here.

El cementerio sigue activo, dispone también de una zona para el entierro de cenizas y su pequeña capilla también está habilitada para responsos y existe también la posibilidad de poner tener una placa sobre pared en memoria de un ser querido que haya vivido en esta ciudad.

The cemetery still active and nowadays has an area for the burial of ashes, the chapel has is also available for services. Exist also the possibility to have a wall plaque commemorating the life of a love one who lived in this city.

Este cementerio ha sido recientemente integrado por el gobierno británico, junto con los de Madrid y Bilbao en la Fundación Cementerios Británicos en España, para fomentar el apoyo y la sinergia entre ellos, ya que cada uno se considera responsabilidad de la comunidad ex patriarca que vive allí. This cemetery has recently been integrated by the British government, together with those of Madrid and Bilbao in the British Cementeries Foundation in Spain, to foment, support and create synergy between them, since each one is considered responsibility of the expat community that lives there. The details can be accessed on the Foundation's website: (www.britishcemeteriesinspain.org / www.cementeriosbritanicosenespana.org) This is a considerable responsibility for volunteers, so the message we want to give is that the Cemetery is in operation and available to all religions and we expect their survival to be for a very long tome.
