La herradura is part of Almuñecar in the province of Granada, Andalucia. It is localicated on the coast of Granada four kilometres from the province of Málaga, near La Herradura is Almuñecar, Velilla-Taramay and Maro.HistoryLa Herradura has had inhabitant since prehistoric time. In XIX century, in “Pago de la Mezquita” various tumbs with brance weapons were found and in 1950 in “El Sapo” simillars things were found but in better conditions dated from the XV century D.C.There is no evidences of habitants in Roman Times but there are remains of a rural hermitage dated back from the 6th century.There is more information from the islamic time where there is an arch called “Sait” or “Xat” We knowthat Adberraman I arrived in 755 from Damasco.At this time evidences of various battles between muladies in the IX century. Also from their land they exported raisons which were considerated the best from the islamic world.From nazi time there is a watchtower in “Punta de la Mona” restared in XVIII century which is know a lighthause.After the reconquest in 1562 twenty-five of the twenty-eight spanish warships which Juan de Mendoza had sank in La Herradura. And they estimated that between 3000 ans 5000 died.It was due to heavy sea after the ships shelted in Barlovento in Los Berengueles when the winds changed heavily the ships crashed into the rocks. Miguel de Cervantes refered this disasterin Don Quijote de la Mancha In the ilustration time La Herradura had inhabitants and was no longer by the river. It has a strong castle for protection. It was the headquarters of the Guardia Civil and previously it was the police. In the XIX century various Italians families arrived which is thought between them Barbero´s and Garciolo´s families are foundIn the XX century tourism changed everything including its appeareance. For the past three decades La Herradura wants to be independent not part of Almuñecar.GeographyLa Herradura is on the mediterranean sea with a bay with only the beach divided into three parts. The population of La Herradura is located in the middle of the town which runs along the left bank of sand. Now with tourism there are buildings all around the village.
