Winemaker and Enologist Carmelo Ortega was born in 1964 in Tudelilla and has dedicated his whole life to Rioja wines. The origins of his winery “Bodegas y Viñedos Ortega Ezquerro” date back to 1896, when the first grapevines were planted by his great-grandfather Don Quintin Ortega near Tudelilla. In 1998, Carmelo, inspired by the geological characteristics of his vineyards, revived the winery. His wines have received numerous awards on a national and international level.


What is so special about our wines?

The stones scattered on the vineyards act as a protective layer, protecting the loamy soils from poor unbeneficial weather conditions and keeping its moisture at a consistent level. The grapevines are up to 65 years old and set up at a distance of 1.5 metres apart from each other. Small quantities of high quality fruit are the result, an average of just 3,000kg grapes per hectare. The grapes are exclusively picked by hand and only the best ones are finally selected. The fermentation process takes place in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to American and French oak barrels for ageing.
