Your informative, English speaking guide will give you information on what to expect on your unique excursion. Departing from Barcelona, you will drive to Catalunya's Penedes region approximately one hour to the west. Catalunya is one of Spain's most prominent wine-producing areas, boasting eleven appellations of origin (areas where wine-making grapes are grown). Vines have been growing in Catalonia for over 2,000 years. Today Catalonia is Spain's biggest producer of wine with a production of more than 190 million bottles of wine per year, and approximately the same number in bottles of cava. You will spend the day learning about the production of wine and cava (Catalan sparkling wine), and have the opportunity to taste them as well.

Your first stop will be at Bodega Jean Leon, named after the owner (bodega is Spanish for cellar). Jean Leon was born in northern Spain started a journey that took him first to Paris, then to Los Angeles in 1951. He working in the restaurant world and 5 short years later he opened his own restaurant, La Scala in Beverly Hills with the backing of movie star James Dean. Then with the success of La Scala, he purchased his own vineyard in Spain. He was the first in Spain to cultivate Chardonnay and produce Cabernet Sauvignon. Based on quality, elegance and limited production, they combine technical advances in wine making while still doing many tasks by hand the traditional way. Here you will sample two of their wines during your approximate 90-minute excursion and visit.

Your next stop is at the Bodega Torres, which is approximately 40 minutes away. The family-owned and operated company was founded in 1870 and is today one of the largest and most popular wines in Spain. During your approximate 90-minute visit, you will have a guided excursion and tasting of three wines and three varieties of cheese.

The last visit is to Cava Freixenet. Founded in 1861, it is Spain's largest producer of cava (sparkling wine). During your approximate 90-minute visit, you will have a guided excursion through the facility followed by a tasting of two sparkling wines and an appetizer.

Once you have completed your stop at Cava Freixenet, your transportation will return back to your starting point in Barcelona at the Placa de Catalunya (approximately 60 minutes away). From here, you may choose to return to the cruise ship directly, at your own expense, or explore and return at your leisure if time allows. Taxis are readily available.
