Age in Spain

Our story begins in 1994 when our founder, Judy Arnold-Boakes and her husband Jim, formed the first Age Concern in Spain. Many people who had retired from the UK to Spain began to find that life in the sun wasn't always easy - the cost of living in Spain was rising live and people who needed care found that there was very little state provided support. We provided a voluntary telephone information service and voluntary visitors to help people in crisis access services and support. With volunteers in parts of Spain where significant numbers of British expatriates live, we helped to establish a small federation of Age Concern organisations to provide local support for English-speaking people. Together we became Age Concern España.

Our national information and casework service became a separate organisation called ACASA (Age Concern Acción Social y Asistencial) in 2011 as a result of a partnership with Age UK and the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office to help more people access our services.

We changed our name to Age in Spain in 2016, which together with our new Facebook page is helping us to connect with people who are considering a move to Spain, people who live in Spain and their families and friends. We work with charities and organisations in Spain and the UK.

We would particularly like to thank our volunteers, Age UK, the Soldiers Charity, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and Seafarers UK for helping us on this journey.
